Thinking "Outside the Box"

When is the last time you saw a revolutionary idea in the camping business?  Been awhile, right?

Revolutionary ideas take time.  Take for instance the camping cabins.  Now almost every campground has one or two, some campgrounds have as many as 30 or 40.  But when someone put up the first one, I am sure someone or many said; “How stupid!” or “It will never catch on!” or worse!!!

We have seen much progress in the business in operations.  I can remember when we first started in the business; the accounting was typically on the back of an envelope, with some talk of “about a couple thousand in my pocket from the propane sales!”  Now we have many campgrounds on sophisticated accounting programs that can identify the facts and point the way to a better operation, AND a printout of the income and expense that the bank will appreciated when it comes time to sell and the new buyer goes to get a loan.

The internet has made it much easier to find out about campgrounds and to make a reservation.

So we have seen progress.

But so often you see the same old pattern of occupancy…  July and August are great, the weekends and ok, the three major holidays are jam packed.  But the shoulder season, the weekdays are quite quiet!

What’s new in getting campers to fill those off days?  Tell me.  What have you seen tried that could be the next “Camping Cabin” like idea that will transform the industry.

Think about it and in the NUGGET on Thursday I will give you 10 wild and crazy ideas or my own and some of yours!  E-mail me with ideas you have seen or ideas you have knocking around in you innovative brain!  db@campground-data.com

 End Notes:

"There is a rank due to the United States, among nations, which will be withheld, if not absolutely lost, by the reputation of weakness.  If we desire to avoid insult, we must be able to repel it; if we desire to secure peace, one of the most powerful instruments of our rising prosperity, it must be known that we are at all times ready for war."

-- George Washington (Fifth Annual Message, 3 December 1793)
