Slouching Toward Socialism

A little bit ago there was a little spat in the Republican Party about the emphasis on "Slouching toward Gomorrah". Judge Bork wrote a book outlining how he thought that we as a society were "Slouching toward Gomorrah. Governor Bush said that too often the party emphasis this point at the expense of outlining some of the better points of our society.

Both probably had it partly right. I am sure you can see areas of our society that are on the way to Gomorrah, but it your look carefully you can see some areas that are a bright spots in our people.

But I think a more serious problem and perhaps a corollary problem to Slouching toward Gomorrah is that we are Slouching Towards Socialism.

There is evidence all around. Bill Bradley running for President says that it is the birthright of any American to have good healthcare. The health care system is so flawed by government influence that the only answer will be more government. This will happen until the system collapses and someone has to apply common sense to the system.

The Census Bureau wants to redefine poverty. Many politicians say that the minimum wage must be a "Living Wage". Just who do you think will determine what is a living wage? It will not be common sense, it will not be the markets, it will be a government bureaucrat buried in the bowels of some government agency immune from accountability.

It is the birthright of every American to work hard and do his best to be a good citizen and to provide for his needs. 95% of Americans can do just that and we should take care of the 5% who just can't. But too often the definition gets adjusted to include this group and if we are going to include them why not these. That 5% gets artificially raised and raised again until a large group fully capable of caring for themselves kind of like being cared for with the real object is to include more and more voters! In the process more and more people expect it!

Social Security started out as a good idea. It was a little stipend to help out on your retirement. Now it is all many have because they did not think it necessary to do so& the "Government will do it". It has grown into a welfare system for the retirees paid for on the backs of their children. I know, I know, all you retirees "Have paid into it all my life and I deserve it!", and you do. But to get $1,000 a month or more how much would you have had to pay? The answer is more than you did! Something for nothing. Welfare.

Why should the government have a welfare system for people completely able to care for themselves? Maybe there is a need but it should make economic sense and not require more and more taxes to cover the costs!

As we are required to have less personal responsibility& Guaranteed Healthcare, guaranteed retirement&. We get lazier and more relaxed& And the attitude shows in the youth of America. If they know without a doubt that THEY were the ones responsible to build a life they might take their education seriously. To see if my thesis is correct you might just ask a young person just what the term "Slouching toward Gomorrah" means.

"Slouching toward Socialism" may be the reason we are "Slouching toward Gomorrah".
