A Testing Time for Parents

Editor's note: Polk County Schools (middle schools) are starting the school year with a mandatory school uniform policy. There has been much controversy about the issue.

As we finish up July back to school time is here, but with a difference for some Polk students and parents. Uniform time, but this year it is uniform time with a punch…. You will come to school in the required uniform OR ELSE. School is a testing time for students, but this year it will be a testing time for parents.

Will they be spoiled brats continuing to whine or will they be adults and role models for their children. Sure our country was founded on protests… but once the protests were made and the decisions were made we move on. We have elections, we have a winner… we have a loser. We live with the decision and wait for the next election.

The easy part was making the decision, getting it approved by the school board, but now is it "rubber meets the road" time! Now comes enforcement time.

The parents who were against the decision did the right thing during the process. They talked to Superintendent Reynolds, they went to school board meetings and made their feels known and made their arguments. They said their piece, they had petitions signed, they wrote letters to the editor.

But now, the decision has been made. Time for parents to "cool it". You had your say, the decision was made, now is the time to go along, see how it works and maybe take another look in a year or so. In the vernacular of the time… "Get over it" or better yet, "Learn to love it".

Look at it this way; what is the worst that can happen? You bought some shirts and shorts and skirts that can be worn anywhere. You might have saved money by not having to have "The" label. Sure they may look generally the same… but that isn't all bad.

And… it may even work! It may take the emphasis off what I wear and on what I learn. The students may be known for what they know, not what they wear.

We elected Reynolds and the School Board to make decisions. They make hundreds of decisions over the school year, many of these decisions have far more reaching impact on your child' education that the "school uniform" issue.

I don't think they made the decision on uniforms because they thought it would be bad for the schools. It would have been much easier to do nothing. They made this tough decision because they thought it would be better and help your kids learn.

So, "let it go". But you have learned that it is important to get involved with the schools and your child's education. Uniforms will not be the "end all" to make schools better, but parent involvement will. So turn your ardor to education… get involved with the homework, talk to the teacher, look at the test scores of the school.

You learned how to get involved with the school uniform issue. You may not have won, but you will win if you stay involved and make the commitment (along with the superintendent and the board) to make Polk County schools better.

You have the opportunity to finish the deal by being a role model for your child. You fought the battle, you lost, but now you accept the decision and live with it!

Or you have the opportunity to be a bad example. You have the opportunity to continue the battle, involve you children in the continuing battle.

You know that it just may be possible that you are wrong and the Reynolds and the Board are right!

Make a choice. Be classy and quit whining!
