Arrogance in Today's Society

Several years ago the generation got the title "The Me Generation". Seems we have to have labels and I am suggesting one for some of the current crop of young to middle age… The "Arrogant ones". We may modify that to just plan "boorish" or simple "mannerless".

The main source of this day's outrage is the cell phone. You have all had a taste of it. The shopper walking down the mall talking and walking into someone. The driver talking and not paying attention to the red light that has turned green. This is the least of problems with cell phone and cars. The use of cell phones can kill!

At a televised golf tournament you hear an errant cell phone ringing at a critical time. At Wimbledon as a player got ready to serve your attention (and the players;) was diverted by a cell phone.

I was at a meeting where there were three cell phones lying on the table. I made a comment…. And the answer was, "If you had kids at home you would understand." You must understand that this is the first generation of parents that have had kids at home! It is amazing that these kids got raised "Without Cell Phones".

Recently I was at the first tee to enjoy a round of golf. Another foursome was teeing off and a cell phone rings. One of my foursome answers and begins to talk. He walks away from the tee, but everybody can hear. Throughout the round the phone rang… and was answered. There are new rules from now on in my foursome…. If a cell phone rings, the phone goes in the nearest lake or bush.

Is it the arrogance of self-importance (I must be in touch at all times!) or just plain bad manners?

We have examples of self-importance and arrogance in out national leaders. Hillary Clinton has displayed the epitome of self importance by thinking about running for the senate in a state she has never lived, never worked, never really cared about. Oh, but I am a "tireless advocate". Because "I am me" I can represent you better than someone who has lived in the state. Because "I am Me" you should elect me. Think about the campaign donations coming in. Isn't it arrogant for someone outside of the state to give money to her campaign? I want to help you represent someone in another state. Whose interest are they serving, the taxpayers or New York or their own agenda? Arrogance!

She does not have the lock on arrogance in the family. The President recently went on a "poverty" tour. Visiting spots with high unemployment and poverty. He had the arrogance or perhaps it is chutzpah to feature two areas the should be poster areas for government failure.

Thirty some years ago President Johnson launched his War on Poverty in Appalachia. Thirty years later and billions of dollars or your tax dollars later Appalachia is still Appalachia. Your church may send missionaries to Appalachia to help out.

Another stop was at an Indian reservation. A world class example of government failure. But the President has the arrogance to say we (the government) is here to help.

If you stop and think about his tour it really is a tour of government failure, but touted as "We must help these poor people". We have had government programs in place to solve this problem, but it is not solved. If the solution is not working, more of the solution will not solve the problem. We must help, but perhaps they are best helped by the government getting out! When you do something for someone that he can do himself you are hurting, not helping.

According to certain politicians we have 4 million hungry children. First of all I would like to know how they know this. It is SO specific. But assume it is right. That means we have 8 million parents not living up to their responsibility. If we just had a program to make parents live up to their obligations. But the arrogance kicks in and we are now going to feed the hungry children by giving money to the already irresponsible parents.

So arrogance is part of our culture. The cell phone is just the closest evidence of that culture. Just a reminder, the cell phone is an endangered specie in my foursome!
